Good morning people! I am DANILO and

This morning we are going to speak about the slums or informal settlements.

Today we have as guest to:

o   Architect SUSANA
       o   Planning boss WILFER

       o   Sociologist CAMILA

       o   Community leader CAMILO
As introduction, what is a slum?

This is a fixed place that consists of a population, this beyond of control for urban management.

Generally is referred to as “invasions”, are big and dense settlements of persons at outskirts.

Almost always these buildings were made from poor materials, and that is very dangerous for all.

The principal cause for this is the unstoppable cities growth and the violence immigrants.

This people need a lot of solutions right now, more opportunities and a worthy life.

Susana, will talk us about the types of slums.

 v  SUSANA:

Good morning, Ok DANILO, have two types of settlements, in mountain side and riverside

The mountain side settlements are localized generally around the ways and in the top of the suburbs, usually these terrains are very craggy, with high slope and clay soils, so in these terrains are dangers to build a house. These one are losing compaction every winter and these falls easily because the weight of the houses.

And in the cities the riversides are occupied by poor families and displaced persons, these families are settling in river inundation zones, each river has an area of retreat on each side, when the residents are occupied these areas, they are in high risk of avalanche for the immediate increasing of the water level.

WILFER, what places present these types of settlements in Medellin?

v  WILFER:

Good morning people. My name is Wilfer Ramirez. I am the planeation`s Boss In our city it happens in the following places

Edges of rivers and creeks:

Both Moravia, near the Medellin River and el barrio La Iguana, near the creek La Iguana, are the informal settlements near rivers and creeks most known in the city. The mayor problems of these settlements are the health conditions, because due to the proximity to the rivers people tend to have respiratory diseases and are likely to suffer floods in rainy seasons.

Example of these can be barrios Santo Domingo Sabio, Pajarito, El Picacho, el 12 de Octubre, Santa Rita, Pinares de Oriente, among others. These occur because of the excessive growth of the cities, that because of the high concentration of buildings in the center the new residents are forced to move to the periphery that in geography such as the one in Medellin it results in the mountains

v  MARIA CAMILA:

Good morning viewers

Currently, most Latin American cities are experiencing this kind of problem, Medellin is one of them and the main causes of informal settlements that occur are:

-According to the United Nations Programme for Human Settlements, in 2006 there were nearly one billion people could only find a home in poor settlements and overcrowded in most cities.

- the current administration and urban development authorities can not address the needs of the entire community

-a group of people needed a place to live but do not have the financial resources needed to purchase a home like "regular

-The residents usually lack sufficient educational preparation and therefore they are not common in formal economic activities or the level of the labor market next door.

-rural migrants move to already overcrowded cities, where the newcomer has little choice but to occupy land-insecure

The few opportunities that people have to come often lead people to crime, itincreases violence and discrimination in these areas

-The huts come without responding to any order, no matter where or how

-The squatters resort to demonstrations to pressure and thus achieve certain goals, urban social movement has arisen to achieve, through the provision of land, a place to live

-The ignorance and undervaluation in a different way of producing city, has generated parallel exclusion. Segregation and marginalization of the settlements, which have ended up further strengthened.

-He is a community leader who will explain the solutions that coul be implement in his neighborhood.

 v  CAMILO:

Good morning

Camila Well, if you like you were saying there are several ways of possible solutions to the problem of settlements, among these we have the solution of system utilities which are vital for daily living, which creates literacy culture in the barrio This is given by creating educational facilities in the neighborhood, well, job creation in the district by government and private enterprise to create more opportunities. The generation of road infrastructure, this helps to improve public transportation and connects the neighborhood with the city. And finally, the right to housing requires the creation of housing and the creation of a partially ordered plan for the neighborhood and the house will be out of natural hazard.

v  DANILO:

This is the end, thank you all for your attention
Bye bye!
